Celebrities Who Never Married: Well-Known Figures Never Tied the Knot

Marriage as a celebrity can be a be a tough proposition, as any regular reader of gossip columns can attest. Perhaps that’s why there are so many well-known cultural figures and celebrities who never married? It’s worth some thought for sure.

This list runs the gamut from well-known modern film and television stars to well-regarded literary and political figures of the past and even a queen of England… yes, we said a QUEEN OF ENGLAND. Some have stayed single, others have been in longterm relationships, and there’s also no gender bias, as there are gathered here nearly as many male celebrities who have never tied the knot. Be sure to SHARE this list and let us know if any of these celebrities who never married surprise you.

Lauren Graham

Lauren Graham seems very happy in her longterm relationship. The Gilmore Girls and Parenthood actress has been dating Peter Krause for seven years. The pair met in 1995 after starring together in the sitcom, Caroline in the City. However, the two did not reconnect until they were slated to play brother and sister on the NBC drama, Parenthood. During the production of the show, the couple began dating and have been together ever since. They currently live together in Los Angeles. Graham has been very open with the public regarding her relationship with Krause. While marriage doesn’t seem to be in the future anytime soon, Graham has said it is something she would be open to exploring.

Al Pacino

Al Pacino has never settled down for marriage throughout his life and has quite the dating history. The Academy Award-winning actor, however, does have three children. Pacino has one daughter named Julie Marie with acting coach Jan Tarrant, and a set of twins named Anton James and Olivia Rose, with actress Beverly D’Angelo. Pacino dated D’Angelo for seven years, but their relationship ultimately ended. Pacino is also known for his romantic relationship with Godfather co-star, Diane Keaton. Up until recently, Pacino was dating Argentinian actress Lucila Polak, but the pair parted ways in 2018.

Naomi Watts

One can never accuse Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive, 21 Grams) of being wary of longterm commitment. She and actor Liev Schreiber were together for 11 years and had two children together. However, the two never made things legally official through marriage before they split in 2016.

Mindy Kaling

Thanks to her work on The OfficeThe Mindy Project, and numerous successful films, Mindy Kaling has been one of the biggest names in comedy over the last decade. Despite this, she’s kept her love life out of the public eye. The unmarried Kaling has stayed out of high-profile relationships, and has kept the father of her child (born in 2017) secret, saying “My feeling is that until I speak to my daughter about that, I’m not going to talk to anyone else about it.”

Jon Hamm

It is surprising to hear that Jon Hamm has never been married. The actor was in an 18-year-long relationship with screenwriter Jennifer Westfeldt, which he considered to be an unofficial marriage. In 2009, the couple went into business together to form their own production company called Point West Pictures. In 2017, the couple split and decided to go their ways leaving Hamm single. Since the breakup, Hamm’s career has only gotten bigger. Along with starring as a guest on several comedies including Parks and Recreation and The Last Man on Earth, Hamm has had major roles in Mad MenBaby Driver and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Marisa Tomei

Marisa Tomei has been in an incredible number of projects since beginning her career in the 1980s. While the Academy Award-winning actress is not married, she did date actor Logan Marshall-Green from 2008 to 2012. The pair were rumored to be engaged but the rumors were shut down by Tomei’s representation. Tomei has been outspoken about marriage and why it might not be for her. During an interview in 2009, Tomei said, “I’m not that big a fan of marriage as an institution, and I don’t know why women need to have children to be seen as complete human beings.”

Tyra Banks

Supermodel and America’s Next Top Model host Tyra Banks has been in the limelight for decades and been in several high-profile relationships. However, she hasn’t tied the knot. Why may come down to her past relationships. She’s said of past relationships, “I won’t be using a lot of names on the show, but a specific relationship had not just cheating but emotional abuse. It was really bad, but that made me strong.”

Anna Kournikova

Anna Kournikova was one of the world’s best tennis players in her prime. Kournikova had to retire at the age of 21 due to a serious back and spinal injury. While it took her off the court, it did not take her out of the public eye. Her rise in tennis made her a very notable figure and linked her romantically to many celebrities, including NHL players Pavel Bure and Sergei Fedorov. Kournikova has also been romantically linked to Enrique Iglesias. Rumors have circulated about the pair being married, yet Kournikova has adamantly denied those rumors. While they are not married, the pair do have two children together.

Goldie Hawn

Unlike many of the other entries on this list, actress Goldie Hawn (Foul Play) has actually been married twice: to Gus Trikonis from 1969 to 1976, and Bill Hudson from 1976 to 1982. However, she makes it thanks to her 35-year relationship with Kurt Russell, which includes one son, numerous stepchildren, 5 homes, and zero weddings.

Chelsea Handler

Chelsea Handler has always been fairly open about her dating life. While Handler has been candid about her dating life and choices, it doesn’t seem like she is going to marry anyone anytime soon, regardless of their relationship status. Handler even put out an anti-marriage poster for her Netflix series, Chelsea, as a joke PSA. The small clip shared the phrase, “Marriage. You can say no.” More recently, Handler seems to have slightly changed her opinion when it comes to marriage. She has seemingly come around to understand that you can be loyal and committed to someone without the commercialization of the procedure.

Owen Wilson

Owen Wilson has been in Hollywood for a long time, yet never managed to find the “one.” While Wilson has yet to settle down, he still has a dating history of Hollywood celebrities. In 2002, Wilson’s former girlfriend, Sheryl Crow, released a song titled “Safe and Sound,” which is dedicated to Wilson and claims to detail the story about their relationship. Even though Wilson is not married he still has three kids. He has a son with his former girlfriend Jade Duell, a second son with Caroline Lindqvist, and a daughter with Varunie Vongsvirates.

Maya Rudolph

It may seem like a surprise that Maya Rudolph is not married to her longtime partner, Paul Thomas Anderson. The couple has been together since 2001 and collectively have four children. They have three daughters, Pearl, Lucille, and Minnie and one son, Jack. While they are not officially married, they often refer to each other as husband and wife when doing interviews. For Rudolph, the term husband “means he’s the father of my child, and I live with him, and we are a couple, and we are not going anywhere.”

Matthew Perry

Friends star Matthew Perry never tied the knot. Over the years, Perry has been linked to Yasmine Bleeth and Julia Roberts. In 1997, after his relationship with Roberts, Perry completed a rehab program for a Vicodin addiction. Unfortunately, Perry relapsed in 2001 and had to clean up once again. Since then Perry has been able to get his life back. He dated Lizzy Caplan from 2006 until 2016 and reportedly ended the romance because he did not want to marry the actress. Perry is still single and devotes part of his time to working with the National Association of Drug Court Professionals.

Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder – best known to 1980s kids for her turns in Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Heathers and younger generations for her role as Joyce on Stranger Things – has been involved in several high-profile relationships over her career. In the early 1990s, Ryder was engaged to Johnny Depp for three years, and had a long relationship with Matt Damon to close out the decade. Since 2011, Ryder has been in a relationship with Scott Mackinlay Hahn, though the two have expressed no plans to marry.

Edie Falco

Sopranos and Nurse Jackie star Edie Falco has never married, though judging by comments she’s made about marriage in the past, that doesn’t seem like it’s changing anytime soon. She told PopSugar in 2010, “I’m sure my parents’ divorces did affect me in some way, but also in my life in general I don’t see a lot of marriages that look appealing to me. Because I’m not married I tend to get a lot of eye-rolling conversations with people about their marriages. Why would I want to head there? I want love in my life, no question about that. But I have a ton of it. My own kids have seen nothing but love and compassion and friendships that have been worked on diligently because friendships are like marriages in a lot of ways.”

Charlize Theron

For Charlize Theron, a traditional marriage ceremony was never her priority. The Academy Award-winning actress was more concerned about finding a partner that she was happy with. While she has not found that perfect person, she has dated around Hollywood. Theron previously dated Third Eye Blind band member Stephan Jenkin and actor Stuart Townsend. Theron’s most recent high profile relationship was with Sean Penn. While the couple did get engaged, they ultimately split and ended their relationship in June 2015.

Queen Latifah

Despite being a superstar in music, television, and film for over two decades, Queen Latifah has gone out of her way to keep the details of her love life and relationships out of the public eye. For example, in 2017, she as asked by The Hollywood Reporter if she would discuss her romantic relationships on her then-new talk show. She told the outlet, “I don’t feel the need to discuss my private life on this show or on any show. There’s the part of my life that the public and I share together. And there’s the part that’s mine to keep for myself. And that’s mine. For me.”

Danica Patrick

As one of the most famous athletes in the world, you would think that Danica Patrick would have settled down already. However, that is not the case. The race car driver has been married twice before. She first married physical therapist Paul Edwards Hospenthal who she met while recovering from a hip injury. The two split and officially divorced in 2013. After her relationship with Hospenthal, Patrick started dating fellow race car driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The couple broke up in 2017. She more recently has been dating NFL player Aaron Rodgers and has been on quite a serious path. It is unclear if the couple will ever get married, but they seem very happy enjoying each other’s company.

Kristen Davis

Kristen Davis did not always live the fancy Hollywood life she is custom to today. The Sex and the City star is a recovering alcoholic who became sober at the age of 22. Davis attributes growing up in the south and the Southern culture for introducing her to alcohol at a young age. Regardless of her success as an actress, the star never found love in a longterm relationship. Being single did not stop her from starting a family. Davis has adopted two children, a daughter named Gemma Rose and a son named Wilson. The family currently lives together in Los Angeles.

Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue has done a lot during her career including singing, modeling, and acting. One activity she has yet to dip her foot into is marriage. The all-around celebrity had a short engagement to Joshua Sasse, but was quickly called off. In between all of this, Minogue was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to take a step back from performing. Luckily, Minogue beat cancer and has remained in remission ever since. Being single does not bother Minogue, as she believes she does not “need the security of a relationship and she enjoys having the freedom to make her own choices.”

Sarah Silverman

Comedian Sarah Silverman has been in the public eye for over two decades, and over that time period she’s starred in television series, films, and standup specials. In addition, the outspoken Silverman has been romantically involved with some Hollywood heavyweights, including Jimmy Kimmel and Michael Sheen. However, Silverman hasn’t tied the knot, and judging by a 2014 tweet she made about marriage – “Just read that I wanna get married which is hilarious b/c I will never get married. Why would I want the govt involved in my love life? Ew. It’s barbaric.” – it doesn’t look like that’s changing any time soon.

Rebel Wilson

Rebel Wilson is a true force in Hollywood. Along with being an actress, the Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids star is a writer and producer. Wilson hasn’t been very open about her romantic life in the past. The actress dated and lived with her Bridesmaids co-star Matt Lucas from 2012 to 2015. In 2015, the pair ended their relationship and went their own ways. Earlier this year, Wilson began dating Jacob Busch, the heir to Anheuser-Busch. The pair met through mutual friends and are enjoying their time together. Only time will tell if marriage is in their future.

Diane Keaton

Over the course of her 50+ year career in show business, Diane Keaton has had high-profile relationships with Hollywood heavyweights including Woody Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty. None of those relationships ended up in marriage however, in part due to Keaton’s own feelings on the subject. She’s been quoted as saying, “I don’t think that because I’m not married it’s made my life any less. That old maid myth is garbage.” In her later years, Keaton also hasn’t let not being married stop her from starting a family, as she adopted two children on her own.

Lucy Liu

Lucy Liu has been romantically linked to many celebrities over the years, such as George Clooney and Will McCormack. However, Liu never settled down for the long haul. The Elementary and Charlie Angels star was in a longterm relationship with Noam Gottesman, but it did not lead to marriage. In 2015, the actress chose to become a single parent and had a son through a gestational surrogate. Liu is very outspoken about her choice to become a single parent and states that it was the right decision for her at the time, as she was incredibly busy.

Sheryl Crow

Singer Sheryl Crow has been involved in several high-profile relationships over the years, including romances with guitar legend Eric Clapton and actor Owen Wilson. The closest Crow came to marriage was her 2005 engagement to disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong (pictured). However, the couple split the following year, before any wedding could take place.

Oprah Winfrey

Talk show host turned “queen of all media” Oprah Winfrey has been with her partner Steadman Graham since 1986. The couple were briefly engaged to be married in 1992, however no ceremony ever took place. Decades later, Winfrey discussed why no ceremony ever took place, saying, “His interpretation of what it means to be a husband and what it would mean for me to be a wife would have been pretty traditional, and I would not have been able to fit into that.” In a separate interview, Winfrey said of marriage, “What I realized is, I don’t want to be married… because I could not have the life that I created for myself.”

Cote de Pablo

NCIS actress Cote de Pablo has never been married. The actress was in a 15-year relationship with fellow actor Diego Serrano, yet the two never decided to tie the knot. The Los Angeles-based actress has remained single since breaking up with Serrano in 2015. It is unclear why the couple broke up or what her stance is on marriage. Many fans have hoped that de Pablo will date her NCIS co-star, Michael Weatherly. However, Weatherly is happily married to Bojana Janković. The two, however, are very close friends.

Shonda Rhimes

Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes is one of the most powerful women in television, which may explain why she’s chosen not to marry. She once told Oprah that she didn’t want to risk losing the ability to live her life exactly how she wanted. Rhimes does have a large family however, having adopted two children and having had a third child through gestational surrogacy.

Allison Janney

Allison Janney is one of the most accomplished actresses in recent memory, having won seven Primetime Emmy Awards, three Critics’ Choice Television Awards, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe Award, three Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. So, the lesson here may be not getting married is for the best.

Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel had an incredible contribution to the fashion community. While Chanel focused on her work, she never sought out the time for marriage. Chanel, however, did engage in relationships during her lifetime. The fashion mogul had a short-lived relationship with composer Igor Stravinsky and attended the premiere of Rite of Spring. After that relationship, Chanel began a decades-long relationship with Hugh Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster. The pair met when Chanel was invited on his yacht. The couple dated for a long time and Grosvenor even reportedly proposed. Chanel ultimately turned him down.

Kourtney Kardashian

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick’s long-running relationship was chronicled on serious reality television for pretty much the entirety of the nine years they were together. Over that span the couple had three children, but never tied the knot. Disick almost proposed in 2011, however chose not to after Kardashian said, “If things are so good now… why would we want to change that?” when he brought up marriage.

Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais has been in a serious and committed relationship with Jane Fallon since 1982. While the couple has been together for 37 years, they don’t see the point in the actual marriage ceremony. Part of this is because of Gervais views on religion. As an atheist, the comedian doesn’t see the point of sharing the ceremony with God if there is no true God. The couple never had children as well. Gervais is known for going against the traditional route, so it is not a surprise that he is not married in the traditional sense.

Lauryn Hill

Singer Lauryn Hill has had a famously strange career path since her commercial breakthrough 20 years ago. Hill’s love life has taken a similar path. The singer was in a relationship with Bob Marley’s son Rohan for 15 years that resulted in 5 children. However, the couple never married and split when Hill had a child with another man.

Dana Delany

Actress Dana Delany, best known for her roles in numerous films, the voice of Lois lane in numerous animated Superman projects, and the television series Desperate Housewives, has long been one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelorettes. However, judging by comments she made in 2007, Delany hasn’t remained unmarried by choice. At the time she said, “Marriage has never been a big deal for me… But I think I’m ready now… I got to have all the fun in the world, to experience a lot of people and figure out what I really like.”

Queen Elizabeth I

Queen Elizabeth I, who reigned over England from 1533 to 1603, was known as the “Virgin Queen” because of her constant refusal to marry. Elizabeth turned down many suitors over the course of her life, and often claimed to be married to her subjects. To this day historians debate why she never married.

Kimberly Stewart

Actress and fashion designer Kimberly Stewart, daughter of Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer Rod Stewart and actress/model Alana Stewart, nearly didn’t make this list. In 2005, Stewart – then 19 – was engaged to Laguna Beach star Talan Torriero. However, the two called off their engagement rather quickly, and Stewart has remained unmarried since, though she did have a child with film star Benicio del Toro.

Vanessa Paradis

Now before you yell at us, yes Vanessa Paradis did eventually get married in 2018 when she tied the knot with French writer Samuel Benchetrit. However, she earns an honorable mention because of her near-two decade-long relationship with Johnny Depp. The two were together from 1998 to 2012, and had two children together but never tied the knot. Given what happened in Depp’s later marriage to Heard, it seems like it was for the best that Paradis never married him.

Jorja Fox

Actress Jorja Fox is known for her work on shows such as The West Wing and CSI. The dramatic actress is also known for keeping her personal life under wraps and out of the public eye. Fox has been rumored to be in several different relationships over the past few years, but has managed to keep them all very secretive. At one point, a rumor was going around that Fox had previously married. The rumor, however, was found to be inaccurate. Fox is more focused on keeping her career in the public eye, rather than her dating life.

Andrea Tantaros

Former Fox News personality Andrea Tantaros doesn’t seem in a rush to tie the knot. The former host of Outnumbered and The Five has been dating Dave Navarro since 2015. Navarro, who is a member of the band Jane’s Addiction, has been married three times and might not be in a rush to settle down once again. Tantaros has also been involved in a legal battle with Fox News, alleging she was a victim of sexual harassment from former Fox host Bill O’Reilly. She also claims that she was subjected to demeaning comments regarding her body from Roger Ailes, which ultimately affected her career when she dismissed his comments.

Miranda Richardson

English actress Miranda Richardson has appeared in a wide variety of films over the course of her career, winning numerous awards. Perhaps all that work has been the reason Richardson hasn’t had time to marry or have children, though honestly given the accolades she’s earned, we can’t blame her if that’s the case (and we might have to consider that course of actions ourselves).

Greta Garbo

Early-Hollywood actress Greta Garbo came extremely close to marriage but ultimately could not commit. Garbo left her fiancé, Jack Gilbert, standing at the altar on their wedding day. The runaway bride claimed she was interested in marriage, but Gilbert was just not the right person. Garbo continued to date throughout her career and did have a public relationship with Leopold Stokowski. Since her death, biographers have released that they believed Garbo was bisexual or lesbian and had dated women in her life as well. The information was uncovered in a series of letters that Garbo wrote to other women.

Dina Meyer

Actress Dina Meyer has had a long run on television and film since her breakout roll on Beverly Hills, 90210 in the early 1990s. Since then, Meyer has played every type of character from soldier to superhero. Over that time, she has been romantically linked to Shane West and Billy Joel, however in recent year’s she’s done well to keep her romantic life out of the public eye.

Susan B. Anthony

Susan B. Anthony was too preoccupied with supporting women’s rights to get married. Anthony was one of the main leaders during the women’s suffrage movement and made that her main priority. While Anthony had several offers of marriage during her teenage years, she never seriously considered any of them. Anthony did not agree with the regulations of marriage during the era and was highly against the laws that gave husbands complete control over a marriage. Anthony dedicated her life to service and did not let her age keep her from working. Anthony died at the age of 86 without ever taking a husband.

Mary-Louise Parker

Mary-Louise Parker has had some major highs and lows in her previous relationships. The Weeds actress dated actor Billy Crudup from 1996 to 2003. Crudup ended the relationship while Parker was seven months pregnant with their son and went on to immediately date Claire Danes. Following the breakup, Parker remained single until she started seeing her Weeds co-star, Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The pair hit it off and announced their engagement in February 2008. However, the engagement was rather short and the two broke up that following April. Parker has not been linked to anyone publicly since the breakup and has shifted her focus to her family and career.

Jacqueline Bisset

Actress Jacqueline Bisset has been involved in numerous long and serious romantic relationships over the course of her career with partners including Canadian actor Michael Sarrazin, real estate magnate Victor Drai, dancer and actor Alexander Godunov, actor Vincent Pérez, and martial artist Emin Boztepe. However, none of these relationships ended with a walk down the aisle.

Monica Lewinski

Monica Lewinsky’s past has made it hard for her to have a typical relationship. While Lewinsky is not married, she prefers to keep her dating life private regardless. “You can ask it, but I keep my personal life private,” Lewinsky told People. “I think people have known enough about my romantic life for a lifetime.” Whether or not Lewinsky does find love and marriage in the future, it seems like she will keep the information tucked away in her private life. While Lewinsky is open to marriage, it isn’t her main priority at the moment. The activist is busy helping others combat cyberbullying as well as being active in the #MeToo movement.

Janet Napolitano

Janet Napolitano is one of the most distinguished female politicians in U.S. history, having served as United States Secretary of Homeland Security from 2009 to 2013, and was president of the University of California for several years thereafter. Napolitano, who’s never married or had children, has long has had her sexuality questioned. She has responded to these claims by saying she’s “just a straight, single workaholic.”

Harper Lee

Harper Lee, the legendarily reclusive author of To Kill a Mockingbird, shied away from the spotlight for many years after her lone novel was published. She was once quoted as saying she never wrote again for, “Two reasons: one, I wouldn’t go through the pressure and publicity I went through with To Kill a Mockingbird for any amount of money. Second, I have said what I wanted to say, and I will not say it again.” That attitude seemed to leak into Lee’s personal life, where she never married or seriously dated.

Jane Austen

Novelist Jane Austen was well-known for bucking the social norms of the era she lived in, including in her romantic life. Austen had several relationships that didn’t end in marriage, most notably with politician Thomas Langlois Lefroy.

Eva Mendes

It may surprise many people that Eva Mendes has never been married. Mendes, who rose to fame thanks to hits like Training Day and Hitch, has been in a relationship with Ryan Gosling since 2011. The couple currently has two daughters together, 4-year-old Esmeralda and 3-year-old Amada. During their past nine years together, the couple has been very closed off from the limelight and keep their personal lives out of the public eye. While it doesn’t seem like marriage is in the cards for this couple, it also doesn’t seem like they are breaking up anytime soon.
